Journalists clamour for first glimpse of ŠKODA’s A+ SUV concept

ŠKODA’s VisionS concept car has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show amid a flurry of flashbulbs, as photographers and journalists clamoured for a first glimpse of the car.

Members of the press in Geneva had already seen photos and illustrations of the VisionS, but this was their first chance to see it in the flesh. There was huge excitement on our stand during its unveiling and, if early comments are anything to go by, it’s sure to earn lots of fans among customers.

“My wife has a Yeti and we’re due to replace it at the end of the year,” said freelance journalist Alisdair Suttie. “She takes no interest in motorshow debuts, but I mentioned ŠKODA was launching a larger SUV and she immediately needed to know about it, asking when it would be available.”

Keith Jones from Parkers said: “It’s surprisingly compact and moves the ŠKODA design language on without going as far as to potentially alienate current customers. It’s bound to get new people into the brand who wouldn’t have bought a ŠKODA before, so it's sure to be a massive hit.”

After unveiling the car, ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier said: “We already have a successful model in the compact SUV segment with the ŠKODA Yeti; now we are using our expertise in 4x4 technology to develop the new SUV model. This study also demonstrates our most important future technologies, such as the plug-in hybrid drive system; a similar drive system is also being tested for production cars.”

The VisionS is a six-seat concept version of the A+ SUV that ŠKODA is launching soon. The finished version is expected to have seven seats and is due to arrive in UK showrooms in early 2017.

Head-turning style and performance

This is the first glimpse of ŠKODA’s sharply styled VisionS concept, which is set to take centre stage for the brand at this year’s Geneva motor show. It provides clues to the design of ŠKODA’s A+ SUV, which is due to be launched in early 2017, and is sure to attract lots of attention when the show opens to journalists on 1 March and the public on 3 March.

The VisionS carries the brand’s new design language into the SUV segment. It’s based on Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform and is the first ŠKODA with six seats across three rows.

Another highlight of the concept car is its plug-in hybrid powertrain: with 165kW (225PS) of power, the show car accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of almost 124mph. Just 1.9 litres of petrol is all the car needs to travel 124 miles; it can go up to 30 miles on electric alone and will travel up to 621 miles with both systems.

The 1.4 TSI engine works alongside an e-motor that provides 40kW of continuous power and 220Nm peak torque. It is integrated into the six-speed DSG, which directs power to the front wheels. A second electric motor with up to 85kW of power and 270Nm of torque drives the rear axle. This works independently, meaning the show car has a smart four-wheel drive that requires no mechanical coupling. The three engines allow drivers to choose between several modes of operation, from purely electric to charge modes, always with the goal of maximum efficiency.
